Inspection and maintenance methods of steering system parts

1. Inspection of steering column and steering column

(1) Check the deformation and damage of the steering column and steering column

Repair welding or correction is not allowed. If the deformation or damage is serious, it must be replaced. Check the wear and ablation of the steering column bearing, and replace it if serious.

(2) Inspection of steering drive shaft universal joint

Check the radial clearance of the universal joint in the two directions of the cross shaft 1 by hand, if any clearance is found, replace the bearing 3 of the universal joint. When disassembling the universal joint, remove the bearing 3 first, and then remove the cross shaft 1 (mark the alignment mark between the universal joint 2 and the drive shaft 4 before disassembly). When assembling, the alignment mark of the universal joint 2 and the drive shaft 4 should be aligned first, and the cross shaft 1 should be installed first, and then the bearing 3 should be pressed with vise.

(3) Inspection of steering column support ring

Check the wear and damage of the support ring on the steering column, and replace it if it is serious.

(4) Inspection of safety pins and rubber bearing sleeves

Check whether the safety pin on the steering column is damaged, whether the rubber bushing and polyethylene bushing are damaged. Check whether the rubber supporting ring is aged or damaged. Check the spring for damage or weakening.

2. Inspection of steering gear

(1) Inspection of mechanical steering gear

Check whether the steering pinion and rack are worn or damaged, and whether there is any crack on the steering gear housing, and note that the parts on the steering gear are not allowed to be welded or corrected, but can only be replaced. Also check the wear and damage of bearings and bushings, as well as the wear and aging of oil seals and dust jackets, and replace them in time.

(2) Inspection of steering damper

Check whether the steering shock absorber leaks oil, and the specified oil volume is 86mL.

Check the travel of the steering damper. The working stroke L should be the difference between the maximum length (Lmax) 556mm and the minimum length (Lmin) 344.5mm, which is 211.5mm. It should be replaced when the stroke is insufficient.

Check the damping force of the steering shock absorber, the maximum damping load is 560N, and the minimum damping load is 180N (carried out on the test bench).

Check the bearings of the steering damper for cracks.

Check the rubber bushing at the end of the steering damper for damage and aging.

(3) Inspection of power steering gear

Check all oil leaks and replace all O-rings and gaskets. If there is a problem with the hydraulic distribution valve, it must be replaced as a whole or the sealing ring on the distribution valve. Check the pinion and rack for damage. Check bearings and oil seals for damage. Check the dust cover for damage and aging. Check the steering gear housing for cracks and oil leaks.

3. Inspection of power steering oil pump

Alcohol can only be used to clean all metal components of the power steering pump. Check the flow control valve, check the flow control valve to ensure that it can slide freely in the pump casing and pump body hole, if it is stuck, check the pump casing and pump body hole of the control valve for impurities, scratches and burrs. The burrs can be removed with fine emery cloth. If the valve, pump casing, or pump body are damaged and cannot be repaired, replace the damaged parts.

The flow control valve can only be repaired as an assembly and cannot be disassembled. When adding hydraulic pressure from inlet 1 of the valve, it should be able to enter smoothly. When one valve hole 2 is blocked and pressure is applied from valve hole 3 to the reverse direction of the valve (400-490kPa), air should not flow out from valve hole 1.

Check whether the surface of the front pressure plate and the rear pressure plate are in good contact with the pump ring. When installing, ensure that it is parallel to the pump ring (stator), check all parts for cracks and abrasions, and replace damaged parts. The highly polished surfaces on the front pressure plate, rear pressure plate and pump ring (stator) always have normal wear marks, do not interpret these as scuffs.

Check the pump shaft bushings and bearings and replace if damaged. In order to press the bearing 4 out from the pump shaft 5, press in a new bearing.

Check whether all the rotor blades can move freely in the rotor groove. The groove side clearance between the blade 6 and the rotor 7 is 0.028mm. If it exceeds, the blade 6 should be replaced.

Check the pump shaft spline for wear, the pump shaft for cracks and other damage, replace all excessively worn and damaged parts, and replace the pump shaft snap ring with a new one.

Inspect casing for wear, cracks, cast holes and damage, replace casing if any of the conditions listed.

Check pressure hose and control valve plug and replace if damaged.

Check end cap snap ring and replace if damaged. If the snap ring is twisted or deformed, it cannot be used anymore.

If you are not sure whether the snap ring is good or bad, replace it.

Check the radial clearance between the rotor and the stator, and check the radial clearance between the rotor 7 and the stator 9 with a feeler gauge 8. The use limit is 0.06mm, and the stator 9 (the one with the same mark as the rotor) should be replaced first when it exceeds.

4. Inspection of steering tie rod

(1) Check whether the tie rod is bent

Correct if necessary. Check the threads of the adjusting bolt for chaotic patterns.

(2) Inspection of steering tie rod ball joint

Check the rotational torque and swing force of the inner and outer ball joints (ball stud pins) of the steering tie rod, and use the spring scale 3 to check that the swing forces of the inner and outer ball stud pins 2 and 1 are 5.9-51N and 6.9-64.7N respectively. Use the torque wrench 4 to check that the axial clearance of the tie rod outer ball stud 1 should be 0, and the rotational torque should be 0.3-4.ON·m. If the requirements are not met, the ball stud should be replaced.

(3) Inspection of connecting bracket

Check the connecting brackets, connectors and shock absorber brackets for breakage and deformation, and check the inner bushing of the tie rod for damage and aging.
