A planetary gear is a type of gear structure, usually consisting of one or more external gears rotating around a central gear, just like a planet orbiting the sun, hence its name

 

Principle of planetary gear transmission

The vast majority of gears we are familiar with are gears with fixed rotational axes. For example, mechanical clocks, ordinary mechanical gearboxes, and reducers, although all the gears on them rotate, their center of rotation (which coincides with the center of the circle) is often installed on the casing through bearings. Therefore, their rotating shafts are fixed relative to the casing, which is also known as "fixed shaft gear transmission.

 

Characteristics of planetary gear transmission

Compared with ordinary gear transmissions, planetary gear transmissions have a series of outstanding advantages when their component materials, mechanical properties, manufacturing accuracy, working conditions, etc. are the same. Therefore, they are often used as planetary reducers/planetary gear reducers, speeders, differentials, and reversing mechanisms, as well as other special purposes. The main characteristics of planetary gear transmission are as follows:

 

(1) The planetary reducer has small size, light weight, compact structure, high transmission power, and high load-bearing capacity; This characteristic is determined by internal factors such as the structure of planetary gear transmission, as shown in the following figure.

 

A. The planetary reducer has the principle of power splitting. By evenly distributing several identical planetary gears around the central wheel to share the load, each gear is subjected to a smaller load, resulting in a smaller gear module. Under uniform load, as the number of planetary gears increases, their overall dimensions decrease.

 

B. The planetary reducer utilizes internal meshing reasonably. By fully utilizing the high load-bearing capacity of the internal meshing and the spatial volume of the internal gear (or ring gear), the radial and axial dimensions are reduced, resulting in a compact structure with high load-bearing capacity.

 

C. The planetary reducer is a coaxial transmission device. Each central wheel forms a coaxial transmission, with the input and output shafts sharing the same axis, greatly reducing the size of the length direction of this transmission device.

 

(2) The planetary reducer has a large transmission ratio; As long as the type and gear matching scheme of planetary transmission are appropriately selected, a large transmission ratio can be achieved by utilizing a few gears. In planetary mechanisms that are mainly used for transmitting motion rather than power transmission, their transmission ratio can reach several thousand. In addition, planetary gear transmission, due to its three basic components being able to rotate, can achieve the synthesis and decomposition of motion, as well as complex movements such as stepless and continuously variable transmission.

A planetary reducer/planetary gear reducer can achieve a large transmission ratio, but it must be noted that its transmission efficiency will decrease.

 

(3) High transmission efficiency of planetary reducer; Due to the use of a symmetrical split flow transmission structure in planetary gear transmission, even if it has several evenly distributed planetary gears, the reaction forces acting on the central wheel and arm bearings are balanced, which is beneficial for improving transmission efficiency. When the transmission type is selected appropriately and the structural layout is reasonable, the efficiency can reach 0.97-0.99

 

(4) The planetary reducer has stable movement, strong resistance to impact and vibration; Due to the use of several identical planetary gears evenly distributed around the central wheel, the inertia force between the planetary gear and the rotating arm can be balanced, and the number of teeth involved in meshing can also increase. Therefore, the planetary reducer/planetary gear reducer has stable transmission motion, strong resistance to impact and vibration, and reliable operation.
